Tips on buying your first flute
Q. What is the criteria determining your desire to learn the flute?
A.Flute is very popular instruments used in both orchestras and all manner of popular music. If you want to play in an ensemble, either orchestrally or a band, flute may appeal to you.
Q.What are the advantages to learning a flute?
A.The flute is more often an instrument which would cost you a small amount of money. Also the flute is very light to handle , so not much to carry when turning up for a gig!
Q.What are the principles behind learning to play flute?
A.To blow a flute, it is similar to blowing across a milk bottle to get a note. Choosing which key (or combination of keys) is depressed allows the player to simulate the length of the pipe. The shorter the pipe the higher the note. So if all keys are closed this effectively make the pipe longer and hence a deeper note.
Parts of a flute
Headjoint
One of the most important parts of a flute. This is the piece that you blow into to create the sound. Often made of solid silver, the material used impacts the sound greatly, deciding the overall character of the tone. The head joint features a cork which is used to further adjust the tuning of the flute.Body
Containing most of the keys, the center piece is the biggest part of every flute. The keys may be closed or open hole. The open hole is more difficult to play as a beginner but preferred by professionals.Footjoint
Also containing several keys, the foot joint is the shortest part of the flute. The standard student foot is a C foot, while you'll find a B foot on most intermediate and professional models.Options
For younger students you can buy a curved headjoint which effectively shortens the length of the flute allowing smaller players to be able to reach the notes
Popular solos for the flute
Ray Thomas from the Moody Blues played an iconic solo in the single "Knights in White Satin"
"California Dreamin" played by the Mammas and Pappas in 1965 also a very popular solo.
